Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Materuni Day Trip and why is it popular?
The Materuni Day Trip is a full-day excursion from Moshi to Materuni Village, the last village before Kilimanjaro National Park. This popular trip offers three experiences in one day: a hike to an 80-meter waterfall, a traditional Chagga lunch with banana beer, and a hands-on coffee activity where you roast and grind your own coffee. It offers an easy, affordable way to experience the culture and nature of the Kilimanjaro region without committing to a full trek.
How difficult is the hike to Materuni Waterfall?
The hike to Materuni Waterfall is easy to moderate. It takes about 40 minutes each way on a well-used trail through the village. The path winds through farms and forest, with some rocky sections. It can get muddy after rain, so good walking shoes are a must. The hike suits most ages, including children and adults with average fitness. Take your time, enjoy the views, and bring water.
Can I swim at Materuni Waterfall?
Yes, you can swim at the base of Materuni Waterfall. The pool is cold and refreshing, and it is one of the trip’s highlights. Bring swimwear and a towel. Be careful near the rocks, as they can be slippery. Your guide will advise you on the best spot to swim. It is a great way to cool off after the hike.
How much does the Materuni Day Trip cost?
The Materuni Day Trip typically costs between $91 and $190 USD per person, depending on the operator, group size, and whether you depart from Moshi or Arusha. The price usually includes transport, a local guide, village registration fees, lunch, and the coffee experience. Tips for your guide and any purchases you make (banana beer, souvenirs, coffee) are not included. It is an affordable day trip compared to other activities in the region.
What is the best time to visit Materuni Village?
The best time to visit Materuni Village is during the dry seasons, June to October and December to February, when skies are clearer, trails are in better condition, and views of Kilimanjaro’s summit are most likely. The waterfall remains impressive year-round, and the coffee harvest from March to July offers a unique experience. Rain is possible at any time, so please bring a rain jacket.
What is included in the Materuni Day Trip?
The Materuni Day Trip typically includes hotel pick-up and drop-off in Moshi, with Arusha pick-up and drop-off available for an additional fee. The package covers transport to Materuni Village, village registration fees, an English-speaking local guide, a waterfall hike, a traditional Chagga lunch, banana beer tasting, a coffee experience, and a bag of freshly roasted coffee. Personal items, souvenirs, and tips are not included. We recommend bringing cash for any additional expenses.
Is the Materuni Day Trip suitable for families and children?
The Materuni Day Trip suits families and children well. The hike to the waterfall is manageable, and children often enjoy the adventure. The coffee experience, which includes singing and dancing, appeals to all ages. Adults can enjoy banana beer, and local food is a highlight. Parents should supervise children near the waterfall and pool. Overall, it offers a memorable family outing in the Kilimanjaro foothills.
