8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route
The 8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route with Crater Camp is the most popular way to reach Kilimanjaro’s summit with an overnight stay at Africa’s highest camp. This route offers stunning views, a moderate challenge, and ample time to acclimatize, making it ideal for those with flexible schedules. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it contrasts with the easier, hut-based “Coca-Cola Route” (Marangu) and is more challenging and camping-focused.
The overnight stop at Crater Camp (5,750 m) sets this trek apart, as few trekkers sleep inside Kibo’s volcanic crater. From this exclusive camp, you will enjoy exceptional views of the glaciers and a unique landscape. Starting the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) from 5,750 m allows for a short 1-2 hour climb on Day 8, eliminating the need for a strenuous midnight start and significantly improving comfort and summit success rates.
Approaching from the south, this route offers remarkable ecological diversity, including rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the ice-capped summit. Its “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization profile is a key advantage. On Day 4, you ascend to Lava Tower (4,600 m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,900 m), which helps you adapt to altitude.
This trek achieves a summit success rate of about 90-95% thanks to effective acclimatization, an extra day on the mountain, and an overnight at Crater Camp. Barranco Camp, your Day 4 stop, is widely regarded as Kilimanjaro’s most scenic camp. Whether you are a first-time climber or an experienced hiker, this route offers a comprehensive, rewarding Kilimanjaro experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the success rate for the 8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route with Crater Camp?
The 8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via the Machame Route with Crater Camp offers a summit success rate of approximately 90-95%, among the highest on Kilimanjaro. This is due to extended acclimatization, an overnight stay at Crater Camp (5,750 m) just 145 meters below the summit, and a shorter final ascent to Uhuru Peak of only 1-2 hours. As a result, you start the summit push well rested and acclimatized. If reaching the summit is your main goal, we highly recommend this route.
Is sleeping at Crater Camp safe, and how cold does it get?
With proper preparation and an experienced guide team, sleeping at Crater Camp (5,750 m) is safe. Nighttime temperatures can fall to -20°C or lower, so bring a high-quality 4-season sleeping bag rated for -25°C, thermal layers, a warm hat, and gloves. Because of the low oxygen levels, your guide will monitor your condition closely. Only healthy, well-acclimatized trekkers should attempt Crater Camp, and many operators require a medical check beforehand. Waking up inside the crater, surrounded by glaciers, is a unique and rewarding experience.
How does the Crater Camp route differ from the standard Machame Route?
The 8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via the Machame Route with Crater Camp differs from the standard route by continuing into the crater after Stella Point and staying overnight at Crater Camp (5,750 m), rather than descending to Barafu Camp. This adjustment shortens the summit day and allows for a sunrise start. Trekkers also get a rare chance to see the crater’s glaciers and ash pit up close. The itinerary adds one day and requires advanced gear and fitness. For those seeking a distinctive Kilimanjaro experience, we highly recommend the Crater Camp option.
What should I pack for the 8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route with Crater Camp?
For the 8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via the Machame Route with Crater Camp, you will need: a waterproof jacket and pants, an insulated down jacket rated to -20°C, fleece and thermal base layers, broken-in hiking boots, a four-season sleeping bag rated to -25°C, trekking poles, a headlamp with spare batteries, a 30-liter daypack, water bottles with a total capacity of 2–3 liters, sunglasses, sunscreen, warm gloves, mittens, a balaclava, and hand warmers. Please bring a duffel bag for porters to carry your gear. We provide camping equipment, including tents and sleeping mats. Upon arrival, we will check your equipment and help you rent any missing items.
How much does the 8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route with Crater Camp cost?
The 8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via the Machame Route with Crater Camp typically costs $3,500 to $4,800 USD per person, depending on the operator, group size, and included services. This is higher than the standard 7-day Machame trek because of the extra day, Crater Camp permit fees, and additional logistics. The price usually covers park fees, guide and porter salaries, camping equipment, all mountain meals, and airport transfers. It does not include international flights, travel insurance, tips, or personal gear. Please note that unusually low prices may indicate inadequate porter compensation or compromised safety standards.
Is altitude sickness a concern on the 8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route with Crater Camp?
Altitude sickness is a risk on any Kilimanjaro climb. The 8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route with Crater Camp helps reduce this risk through a strong acclimatization schedule. On Day 4, you ascend to 4,600 m at Lava Tower before descending to 3,900 m, which supports red blood cell production. An additional night at Karanga Camp (3,995 m) on Day 5 allows further acclimatization. Sleeping at Crater Camp (5,750 m) remains a significant altitude challenge. Guides are trained to monitor your health and conduct daily checks. Drink 3-4 liters of water daily, eat well, and follow your guide’s pace—”pole pole” (slowly, slowly). If symptoms become severe, your guide will arrange an immediate descent.
Why is the Machame Route called the Whiskey Route, and is Crater Camp better than a standard Machame climb?
The Machame Route, known as the “Whiskey Route,” is more challenging and involves camping, while the Marangu Route, or “Coca-Cola Route,” is easier and provides hut accommodation. Whether Crater Camp is preferable depends on your priorities. The 8-day Machame Route with Crater Camp offers a higher summit success rate (90-95% vs. 85-90% on the 7-day Machame), a shorter, more enjoyable summit day, and an exclusive experience inside the crater. However, it is colder, more expensive, and requires better gear and fitness. For maximum comfort and a higher chance of summit success, we recommend Crater Camp. For a more affordable yet rewarding climb, the standard 7-day Machame Route remains an excellent option.
