General Travel Information
A Simple Guide to Tanzania: Safari, Beaches & More

Geography & Population
Tanzania is a vast East African nation located just south of the Equator, covering an area of 938,000 square kilometers. It is home to an estimated population of 63 million people. The northern, eastern, and coastal regions are the most densely populated, while the southern part of the country remains more remote and sparsely inhabited.
Climate & Seasons
Tanzania enjoys a tropical climate characterized by two distinct rainy seasons. The long rains occur from March to May, and a shorter rainy period happens between October and November. The ideal time to visit is during the dry season, from July through October, when you can expect clear skies and abundant sunshine, perfect for wildlife viewing and beach vacations. The coastal areas are typically hot and humid year-round.
Visa Requirements
Obtaining a visa for Tanzania is a straightforward process for most visitors. Citizens of North America and Europe have three convenient options:
- Apply at a Tanzanian Embassy or High Commission in your home country.
- Obtain a visa on arrival at any major port of entry.
- Apply online in advance through the official Tanzania Immigration website.
International Airports & Entry PointsTanzania is served by two main international airports:
- Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO): The best arrival point for Northern Circuit safaris, located near Arusha and Mount Kilimanjaro. It is served by airlines like KLM (with daily flights from Amsterdam), Ethiopian Airways, and Kenya Airways.
- Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam: The ideal gateway for travel to Zanzibar, Southern Tanzania, and the western parks. It is served by carriers such as British Airways, KLM, and Swiss International Air Lines.
Top Travel Attractions
Tanzania offers an unparalleled diversity of experiences:
- World-Class Safaris: Witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti, explore the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater, and enjoy game drives in Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks.
- Mount Kilimanjaro: Challenge yourself with a climb to the “Roof of Africa.”
- Zanzibar Archipelago: Discover the pristine beaches and historic Stone Town.
- Cultural Heritage: Visit historical sites, local museums, and experience the rich traditions of over 120 tribal groups.
Culture & Language
Tanzania is celebrated for its political stability and warm, welcoming people. While the country is home to more than 120 tribes, Swahili (Kiswahili) serves as the unifying national language. English is the second official language and is widely spoken in business and tourism, making communication easy for visitors.
Currency & Payments
The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Major credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted at most tourist hotels, lodges, and larger shops. It is also advisable to carry some US Dollars in cash for smaller purchases and local markets.
Infrastructure & Transportation
Major roads between cities and national parks are paved and accessible year-round. However, roads within and around the National Parks are often rough and can become muddy during the rains. For this reason, a 4WD vehicle—such as a Toyota Land Cruiser or Land Rover—is essential and standard for all safari expeditions.
