Amani Forest Camp – Emau Hill

Emau Hill is a comfortable, friendly camp on the border of the Amani Nature Reserve, in the heart of the East Usambara Mountains. Amani Nature Reserve is one of Tanzania’s least-known yet most beautiful reserves.

Built by an entirely local workforce and staffed by community members, Emau Hill (Amani Forest Camp) was originally established by an NGO in collaboration with the local church.

It has been developed to improve community livelihoods and provide a great place for visitors to explore the spectacular Amani Nature Reserve and stay.

Proud of our low-impact, eco-friendly ethos, we continue to find ways to improve our services for our guests while using recognized best practices to keep our environmental footprint as small as possible.

They use renewable energy from solar panels and composting toilets to minimize our impact on the local environment.

Accommodation

Amani Forest Camp has three en-suite cottages, three en-suite safari tents, and a campsite.

Each unit has solar-powered lighting. In three en-suite cottages, there is a socket for charging phones and camera batteries.

All en-suite units have a hot-water supply. Also, provide hot water in our public showers for campers.

Clifftop en-suite cottages. Perched at the top of the cliff are our Clifftop Cottages, overlooking the valley and stream.

These 2 spacious en-suite rooms can accommodate up to 4 people and feature a large window overlooking the forest.

The rooms can be interconnected, ideal for larger families and groups. They are pleasantly furnished with comfortable beds, tables,s, and chairs.

En-suite safari tents. Offer three en-suite safari tents spread out around the grounds. Each unit has solar-powered lighting and a hot-water supply.

Meals. All meals are prepared fresh. Cater for individual needs as much as possible. Each morning, breakfast is a feast, served with Tanzanian coffee or tea.

Lunch can be served at the camp, a picnic lunch provided while on a hike, or a three-course dinner served in the restaurant.

The “Canopy Bar” is well-stocked and offers a great venue for sundowners with a view of the forest.

Emau Hill Experience

Enjoy hiking on Emau Hill to find endemic chameleon species.  Chameleons are very hard to find during the day, but at night they glow white in the torchlight.

Just a short walk from camp, you can find several species of chameleon, including the pygmy Rhampholians.

In addition to the pygmy chameleons, a notable endemic of the Usambaras is the spectacular Usambara three-horned chameleon (Chamaeleo deremnsis); the Usambara two-horned chameleon is less frequently seen.
