Selous River Camp

The camp is set overlooking the spectacular Rufiji River, within woodland commonly visited by (among other wildlife) three different species of monkeys, herds of elephants, and a huge variety of birdlife.

Being the closest camp to the park, located right on the border, means guests avoid long drives to the entrance gate.

The camp itself is down-to-earth and comfortable, the atmosphere is intimate and friendly and the service is personal and professional.

There is a choice of accommodation: nine “mud-hut” style chalets, spread along the river bank; or further back in the forest, four basic tents.

The tents are simple but affordable, and for guests looking for a way to enjoy the magic of Selous River Camp and    Nyerere National Park on a tighter budget, these are a great way to do that.

Accommodation

Selous River Camp’s accommodation comprises nine rooms and four tents.

All accommodation is full board – meaning the price includes three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) per night booked.

Along the river bank are our unique Mudhuts each spacious Mudhut has an en-suite bathroom and a view of the Rufiji River.

Or, for a more wild experience, we also have simple tents located at our woodland campsite.

River camp Mudhuts

The Mudhuts are what Selous River Camp is famous for, and the contrast between the traditional mud structure, and the well-appointed interior is quite striking.

Mud huts have lovely views over the river, which can be enjoyed from outdoor seating on the veranda, and with double beds, large ensuite bathrooms, and solar power fans, they are comfortable, and for many guests a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

A river-facing veranda opens into a comfortable and airy interior.

The inside of the Mudhut is fully decorated and furnished with unique rustic furniture – handmade in our camp workshop from tree branches including a four-poster double bed, draped romantically with fine mosquito netting.

Bed linen and curtains are tailor-made from brightly-colored African kitenge fabrics, and handwoven palm mat carpets on the floor.

Forest tents

Designed to be as affordable as possible without sacrificing comfort, our four simple tents are perfect for those on a budget.

Located in the woodland campsite a short distance away from the river, their simple tents are furnished with two single beds, canvas safari chairs, a small table, and palm matting.

The separate, shared bathrooms, which have running hot water, are clean and airy and only a short walk from the tents.

Tents are lit by solar lighting, and a charging point is available at the bar to charge any batteries.

The campsite is lit in the evenings with paraffin lamps. Bed linen, a torch, towels, and soap are all provided. Children under the age of 14 must share with an adult.

Tents can get warm during the hottest part of the year (Oct-Feb), if you are particularly sensitive to the heat we would suggest one of our Mudhuts instead.

Camp location
