Kibo Hut is the last overnight stop on the Marangu Route before the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It sits at 4,703 metres on the eastern side of the Kibo cone, at the edge of the Saddle, the high alpine desert that stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

What to expect

  • A stone-built hut with shared dormitory rooms and bunk beds, run by Kilimanjaro National Park.
  • Basic facilities: no showers or running water, and simple toilets outside the hut.
  • Meals are prepared and served by your mountain crew.
  • Nights are very cold at this altitude, so a warm sleeping bag and layers are essential.

Your night at Kibo Hut

Climbers arrive from Horombo Hut after crossing the Saddle in the afternoon, then rest, eat an early dinner and try to sleep for a few hours. The summit attempt usually begins around midnight, climbing by headlamp to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim and on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) for sunrise, before descending past Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut the same day.

Kibo Hut is a mountain hut on Kilimanjaro and is not related to Kibo Palace Hotel in Arusha.
