Located at 2,835 meters on the southwestern side of the mountain, this campsite serves as the first overnight stop for thousands of climbers each year who embark on the legendary Machame Route<\/a>\u2014often called the “Whiskey Route” for its challenging yet rewarding nature.<\/p>\n

The campsite derives its name from a metal hut that Rangers originally used in the early days of Kilimanjaro climbing. <\/span><\/p>\n

Access and Routes<\/b><\/h3>\n

The campsite is reached via the Machame Gate, which serves as the trailhead for the Machame Route. Climbers typically spend 5 to 7 hours hiking from the gate through dense rainforest to reach the camp, covering approximately 11 kilometers (7 miles).
